83rd Legislative Session

Texas Lobby Group 83rd Legislative Session Report: Senate Term Draws

After the House and Senate redraw their lines through the Redistricting process, the Texas State Senate “draws” to see who will get a four year term and who will get a 2 year term. Senators – obviously – hope for a four year “draw” so they do not have to run for office for another four years.

Today, the Senate drew for their terms. Those with two year terms include:

Donna Campbell, M.D. (R-San Antonio)

John Carona (R-Dallas)

Wendy Davis (D-Fort Worth)

Bob Deuell, M.D. (R-Greenville)

Craig Estes (R-Wichita Falls)

Kelly Hancock (R-North Richland Hills)

Joan Huffman (R-Houston)

Robert Nichols (R-Jacksonville)

Dan Patrick (R-Houston)

Ken Paxton (R-McKinney)

Charles Schwertner, MD (R-Georgetown)

Kel Seliger (R-Amarillo)

Kirk Watson (D-Austin)

Royce West (D-Dallas)

John Whitmire (D-Houston)

Those that got four year terms include:

Brian Birdwell (R-Granbury)

Robert Duncan (R-Lubbock)

Rodney Ellis (D-Houston)

Kevin Eltife (R-Tyler)

Troy Fraser (R-Horseshoe Bay)

Glenn Hegar (R-Katy)

Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa (D-McAllen)

Eddie Lucio, Jr. (D-Brownsville)

Jane Nelson (R-Flower Mound)

Jose Rodriguez (D-El Paso)

Larry Taylor (R-Friendswood)

Carlos Uresti (D-San Antonio)

Leticia Van de Putte (D-San Antonio)

Tommy Williams (R-The Woodlands)

Judith Zaffirini (D-Laredo)

SD 6 (awaiting special election)

Another significance to note is the timing of Statewide Officeholders. Those that drew four year terms, could – if they decide they want to “move up”- get a free shot at running for Statewide Office in 2014. Those with two-year terms would have to decide if they want to “move up” or “move out”.

The Senate has adjourned until 2 pm Monday. All eyes are now on the House, as we await committee appointments for that side of the rotunda…..
